Our History & Tradition

The History of Wado Ryu Karate Do

Wadō-Ryū Karate-Do, meaning “The Way of Harmony,” was founded by Hironori Otsuka and emphasizes blending, timing, and precision over brute force.

The United States Eastern Wadō-Ryū Karate Federation continues this tradition through structured training, certified instruction, and a commitment to preserving the art as it was intended.

Through decades of dedication, the federation has grown to include dojos and practitioners across the region, all united under the same principles and standards.

Annual C.T. Patterson Championships

Federation-Wide Kata & Kumite Championship

The C.T. Patterson Championships is one of the premier events of the federation, bringing together practitioners from across the region to compete, grow, and represent their dojos.

This annual event highlights skill, discipline, and sportsmanship, while honoring the legacy and leadership within the federation.

C.T. Patterson Scholarship for Excellence

Supporting the Next Generation of Wadō-Ryū Practitioners

The United States Eastern Wadō-Ryū Karate Federation offers the C.T. Patterson Scholarship for Excellence to assist qualified students in continuing their education beyond high school.

The scholarship is available to Wadō-Ryū students, or their children, who meet the established qualifications and demonstrate both academic commitment and personal discipline.

Recipients are selected by the Scholarship Committee following a review of submitted materials, including a questionnaire and written essay.

Scholarship awards are presented annually at the USEWF Tournament.

Karate-Do does not seek to conquer others, but to conquer the weakness within oneself. The Way demands Peace.
